TIME MAGAZINE'S America's most popular breeds.

10.  Rottweiler:
Rottweilers are intelligent, obedient animals that are great protectors. This is why they may be less than friendly with strangers, but playful and loving toward their families.

9.  Dachsund: (should be #1) Dachshunds are a lively and playful breed known to be excellent hunters — hence their name, which means “badger dog” in German. Their adaptability, as well as their affinity for children, makes them the ideal family pet.

8.  Poodle: From 1960 to 1982, the Poodle consistently took the number one spot on the annual list. Perhaps it’s the breed’s inherent intelligence or hypoallergenic coat that led it gain such status. Or maybe it’s just their good looks.

7.  Boxer: Boxers adore their humans, especially children, and are both protective and patient. According to the AKC, this breed was developed in the 19th century for the purpose of dog-fighting. The dog would stand on its hind legs to battle its opponent, which earned it the name Boxer.

6.  English Bulldog: Bulldogs are known for their short legs, smushed face and, of course, their slobber. But they’re also excellent family pets — gentle, protective and easy to groom.

5.  Yorkshire Terrier: The breed is desired for its portability, adaptability and lasting energy.

4.  Golden Retriever:  Golden Retrievers are active, friendly, beautiful and versatile, often acting as guide or search-and-rescue dogs. With an even temper and playful attitude, a Golden is the perfect family pet.

3.  Beagle:  The Beagle is a happy pup that enjoys the company of other dogs and humans, even if it’s prone to follow its nose to mischief from time to time.

2.  German Sheperd:  The German Shepherd is an excellent companion dog, but it’s also one that is consistently used in service — either as a police or military dog. TIME even named a German Shepherd its distinguished “Animal of the Year” for helping to take down Osama bin Laden with Seal Team Six.

1.  Labrador Retriever:
Gentle, friendly and family-oriented, the Labrador Retriever has been America’s most popular dog breed for 21 consecutive years, and it’s easy to see why. This versatile pup comes in three color variations, is active, trustworthy and (of course) adorable.
